Itinerary
After breakfast, our 4-day desert tour from Fes to Marrakech begins with a pickup from your hotel or riad. We head south through the Middle Atlas Mountains, enjoying panoramic landscapes along the way. Our first stop is Ifrane—often called “Moroccan Switzerland”—a clean, alpine-style town where we’ll visit the famous stone lion statue. We then continue to the cedar forests of Azrou, home to wild Barbary macaques that roam freely among the trees. This is a perfect spot for photos and a short nature break. We drive on to Midelt, Morocco’s “apple capital,” known for its agricultural traditions and scenic mountain setting. Lunch is served at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, we cross the Zaabel Tunnel and pass through Errachidia, pausing for photos at a panoramic viewpoint over the Ziz Valley. By late afternoon, we reach Merzouga at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes. Camels await for a magical sunset ride into the desert. After watching the sun dip below the golden sands, we arrive at a comfortable desert camp for dinner, Berber music around a fire, and a night under a sky full of stars.
Wake early to witness a breathtaking desert sunrise, followed by breakfast at the camp. Today is dedicated to exploring the human and natural wonders of the Merzouga region. We visit local nomadic families to learn about their traditional lifestyle, livelihoods, and customs. We then travel to Khamlia village, home to descendants of sub-Saharan communities, where you’ll enjoy a live Gnawa music performance—a spiritual and rhythmic tradition known as Gnaoua Khamliya. We also stop at a desert lake that serves as a vital water source for surrounding villages and observe traditional Berber clothing and cuisine. After a full day of cultural immersion, we return to the desert camp for a second night under the stars.
After breakfast and a final desert sunrise, we bid farewell to the dunes and drive to Rissani—the historic birthplace of Morocco’s Alaouite dynasty. Here, we explore the lively souk, where Berber and Arab traders sell spices, crafts, and local specialties like *Madfouna* (a savory stuffed flatbread often called “desert pizza”) and fresh dates. Lunch follows at a well-regarded local restaurant. In the afternoon, we cross the Ziz Valley and ascend into the High Atlas, arriving in Tinghir. We visit the spectacular Todra Gorge—towering red cliffs carved by a river, surrounded by lush palm groves. From there, it’s a short drive to Boumalne Dades, nestled in the dramatic Dades Valley. We check into a riad with views of the valley and surrounding mountains for dinner and overnight rest.
On our final day, we depart Boumalne Dades and drive through the fragrant Valley of the Roses, passing Kalaat M’Gouna—Morocco’s rose capital. We continue to Ouarzazate, the “Hollywood of Africa,” where numerous international films have been shot. While studio visits are optional (entrance not included), the city’s cinematic legacy is evident everywhere. We then proceed to Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Morocco’s most iconic kasbahs. Once home to around 50 families, this ancient fortified village has appeared in films like *Gladiator* and *Game of Thrones*. After a guided visit and lunch, we cross the High Atlas Mountains via the winding Tizi n’Tichka Pass, with stunning views of terraced valleys and Berber villages. We arrive in Marrakech in the afternoon and transfer you to your riad or hotel, concluding our 4-day journey from Fes through the Sahara to Marrakech.
