Itinerary
Your 9-day tour from Casablanca begins with pickup from the airport or your hotel. We start with a visit to the Hassan II Mosque—the largest mosque in Africa and third-largest in the Arab world, completed in 1993. Its stunning architecture features intricate zellige tilework, carved cedar ceilings, and a 210-meter minaret. Afterward, we transfer to Rabat, where you’ll explore the 17th-century Oudaya Kasbah—a coastal fortress with blue-and-white streets overlooking the Atlantic. Continue to the Hassan Tower, a 12th-century minaret that stands beside the ruins of an unfinished mosque. If time permits, visit the Chellah necropolis and Royal Palace. Overnight in Rabat.
After breakfast, we drive through the Rif Mountains, passing through picturesque Berber villages with terraced fields and lush valleys. Stop for lunch en route before navigating winding mountain roads to Chefchaouen—the “Blue Pearl” of Morocco. This evening, explore the medina’s cobalt-washed alleys at your own pace, admiring the vibrant blue-painted walls (a tradition said to repel mosquitoes and symbolize the sky). Overnight in a riad or hotel in Chefchaouen.
We depart Chefchaouen for Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the best-preserved Roman ruins in North Africa. Wander among ancient mosaics, arches, and olive presses as your guide shares stories of this 2,000-year-old city. Continue to Meknes, the “Ismaelite Capital,” to see Bab Mansour (a monumental 18th-century gate), the Heri es-Souani granaries (once storing food for 12,000 horses), and the Moulay Ismail Mausoleum. Arrive in Fes in the late afternoon for dinner and overnight stay.
Your local Fes guide meets you at your accommodation for a full-day exploration of the medina. Visit the Royal Palace gates, the historic Jewish Quarter (Mellah), and Borj Nord—a 16th-century fortress offering panoramic city views. Enter through Bab Bou Jeloud (the Blue Gate) to explore the labyrinthine souks. Highlights include Al-Qarawiyyin University (founded 859 AD, the world’s oldest continuously operating university), the Chouara Tanneries, and artisan workshops showcasing Fes ceramics. Free time follows for independent exploration or shopping.
After breakfast, we drive south through the Middle Atlas Mountains. Stop in Ifrane—”Moroccan Switzerland”—known for its alpine architecture and snow-capped winters. Continue to Azrou’s cedar forests to observe wild Barbary macaques (feel free to feed them). Lunch in Midelt, the “Apple Capital,” before crossing the Tizi n’Tilghmt Pass into the Ziz Valley. Arrive in Merzouga by afternoon, where camels await for a sunset ride across Erg Chebbi’s golden dunes. Enjoy dinner, Berber drumming, and stargazing at a luxury desert camp with private bathrooms.
Wake early for a desert sunrise, then return to Merzouga by camel. Drive to Rissani to explore Morocco’s largest traditional souk (active on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Sundays), sampling *madfouna* (desert pizza) and dates. Continue to the Todra Gorges—a narrow canyon with 300-meter red cliffs—where you’ll walk along the riverbed. Lunch is served at a restaurant overlooking the valley. In the afternoon, reach the Dades Valley, famous for its “Monkey Fingers” rock formations and kasbahs. Overnight in a hotel with valley views.
Start with panoramic views of the Dades Valley before driving through the fragrant Rose Valley (Kalaat M’Gouna), home to Morocco’s annual Rose Festival. Visit Ouarzazate’s Atlas Film Studios (the “Hollywood of Africa”), then explore Ait Ben Haddou—a UNESCO World Heritage Site and filming location for *Gladiator*, *Game of Thrones*, and *Lawrence of Arabia*. After lunch near the kasbah, cross the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260m), stopping for valley views. Arrive in Marrakech by late afternoon.
Your local guide leads you through Marrakech’s historic sites: the 12th-century Koutoubia Mosque, Saadian Tombs (adorned with marble and gold), and Bahia Palace (19th-century Islamic architecture). Wander the souks for leather goods, spices, and *babouches* (leather slippers). After lunch, visit the Majorelle Garden (vibrant blue tiles and exotic plants) and explore the modern Gueliz district. Evening time is free to experience Jemaa el-Fna Square’s storytellers, food stalls, and musicians.
After breakfast, your driver transfers you to Marrakech Menara Airport or Casablanca Mohammed V Airport based on your flight schedule. This concludes your 9-day journey through Morocco’s imperial cities, desert landscapes, and mountain oases.
