Itinerary
Your 7-day desert tour from Tangier to Marrakech begins with a pickup at Tangier Port or Airport at your scheduled time. We drive to Chefchaouen—a town nestled in the Rif Mountains and part of a biosphere reserve. Known for its striking blue-washed streets, white buildings, and peaceful atmosphere, Chefchaouen offers a unique blend of Andalusian and Moroccan architecture. The city is famous for its local crafts and serene ambiance. Dinner and overnight stay in a traditional riad.
After breakfast, we depart Chefchaouen and drive to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Volubilis—home to the best-preserved Roman ruins in North Africa. We’ll explore ancient mosaics, arches, and olive presses while learning about this 2,000-year-old city. Next, we visit Moulay Idriss—the holy city where we’ll have lunch before continuing to Fes, Morocco’s spiritual and cultural capital. Arrive in Fes in the afternoon and enjoy sunset views over the medina from your riad’s terrace. Dinner and overnight in Fes.
Start with a comprehensive guided tour of Fes’ medina—a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wander through the labyrinthine streets, visiting the Al-Qarawiyyin University (founded 859 AD, the world’s oldest continuously operating university), the Chouara Tanneries, and artisan workshops. After lunch, we drive to Ifrane—dubbed “Moroccan Switzerland”—known for its alpine architecture and cool climate. Continue through the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas, where wild Barbary macaques roam freely. Dinner and overnight in Midelt, the “Apple Capital” of Morocco.
After breakfast, we cross the High Atlas Mountains and enter the pre-Saharan region. The landscape transforms into red-hued desert with dramatic geological formations. We’ll drive through the Ziz Valley, lined with thousands of palm trees, and reach Merzouga at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes. Switch from vehicle to camel for a sunset ride into the desert. Arrive at a traditional Berber desert camp (khaima) for dinner, live music around a fire, and an unforgettable night under a sky full of stars.
Wake early to enjoy the desert sunrise before returning to Merzouga by camel. We then drive to Rissani—the ancestral home of Morocco’s royal Alaouite dynasty. If it’s a market day (Tuesday, Thursday, or Sunday), explore the vibrant souk where nomadic tribes gather to trade goods. Continue to the Todra Gorges—towering red cliffs carved by the Todra River. After a short walk through the canyon, we proceed to the Dades Valley, famous for its fig trees and dramatic rock formations. Dinner and overnight in a local hotel with valley views.
Begin with panoramic views of the Dades Valley from a mountain vantage point. Drive through the fragrant Rose Valley (Kalaat M’Gouna), known for its annual rose festival. Continue to Ouarzazate—”the silent city”—where we’ll visit the famous Atlas Film Studios. Explore Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has appeared in films like *Gladiator*, *Lawrence of Arabia*, and *Sahara*. After lunch, cross the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260m) and arrive in Marrakech by late afternoon. Dinner and overnight in a riad.
After breakfast, enjoy free time in Marrakech until your scheduled transfer time. We’ll accompany you to Marrakech Menara Airport, assist with check-in, and ensure you reach your boarding gate comfortably. This concludes our 7-day journey from Tangier through the Sahara Desert to Marrakech.
